Popper, Karl Raimund

Popper, Karl Raimund
(1902–1994)
Knighted in England in 1965, Popper spent most of his life there or in the English-speaking world. He lived in New Zealand, where he taught at the University of Canterbury from 1937 to 1945. He was professor of logic and theory of knowledge at the London School of Economics after 1960. He received his doctorate, however, at the University of Vienna in 1928, having studied mathematics and physics. He frequented the discussions of the Vienna Circle and shared the group’s general skepticism about metaphysics.
Popper is generally recognized as the founder of critical rationalism. Unlike the Vienna Circle, he did not believe that knowledge was limited to the contents of verifiable statements. For Popper, all general propositions of knowledge were tentative and unprovable, either empirically or rationally. However, through the process of falsification, an observer can at least establish what is not true. Popper was also a bitter opponent of political authoritarianism.
